POP before SMTP

  • Uses POP authentication to temporarily enable relaying from a roving user's machine
  • Avoids VPN software or SSH, which many users do not have or cannot configure
  • After successful POP authentication, mail server will relay mail from IP address for a limited period
  • See http://spam.abuse.net/tools/smPbS.html for instructions and Perl scripts
  • XTND XMIT is better still, but not implemented on all clients (see paper)
