Can we just throw more bandwidth
at the problem? The Japanese Experience
 

  • Japan is perhaps the most "wired" nation on the planet, with typical home connections at 100 Mbps

  • Unfortunately, the Japanese experience is that voracious P2P applications monopolize the network no matter how much bandwidth is provided

  • The small percentage of users who use P2P consistently consume a disproportionately large share of network resources, slowing the rest down (see following slides)
